Meet Jayne Gottschalk, MA, LMFT

I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist focusing on relational issues with couples, lack of fulfillment/happiness with individuals, management of life transitions, parenting issues, divorce coaching and specialize in treating anxiety disorders -- among many other presenting problems.

My clinical experience includes several years as a staff clinician and supervisor at a community mental health agency; with experience on staff at St Vincent’s Hospital intensive outpatient facility. I hold a master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from Fairfield University, and am an AAMFT Approved Supervisor with advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy. My “prior life” includes 12 years experience as a senior executive for several major corporations, which provides me a vast understanding of business culture and the pressures of corporate life.

I’m a clinical fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and a clinical member of the CT Association for Marriage and Family Therapy . I’m also a lifetime member of the International Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy and the New York Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy .

My advanced EFT training has enhanced my relational work by focusing on the emotion in the room and seeing couples and families through an attachment lens. I have seen powerful shifts and new connectedness; closeness and intimacy develop in my couples and families when this modality is employed.

A "resident" of New York, Connecticut and Florida, I’ve been married to the same good man for many years and have two adult children. Being part of the “sandwich generation” I recently lost my mother to cancer and am currently caring for my aged father. I see issues through the eyes of a concerned parent, a loving but sometimes harried wife, a watchful daughter, a good neighbor and a dedicated professional who has gone through many of the same issues of daily living as my patients. I can definitely relate.

I am an advocate of love in any and all forms and happily work with LGBTQ individuals, couples and families.

My work is close, collaborative, warm, compassionate and often filled with humor. I try to find the lighter, more normative side in even the worst of situations. I bring to bear the balance and skills of a trained therapist with a keen eye to uncover and unravel the negative patterns that keep so many of us stuck in dissatisfaction.

Call me a dogged optimist but I firmly believe no matter what the issue of daily living is -- that positive change CAN happen and that change for someone stuck in a negative cycle is both necessary and good – not something to be feared but instead something to embrace. Together we can face life’s problems and determine goals and next steps to create a new pathway to satisfaction, connectedness and peace.

I’m a Certified Discernment Counselor who works with “mixed agenda couples” where one partner wants a divorce and the other does not. Traditional couples therapy does not work with these couples and this short protocol (no more than 5 sessions) provides these couples with the confidence and clarity to make a fully informed decision about their marriage.

Please refer to www.divorceprofessional.com for more information regarding divorce mediation. As a family mediator I work with high conflict families experiencing troubled relationships to help them resolve the issues that keep them apart.

I'm a licensed clinician in New York, Florida and Connecticut and am eager to meet you and start work together!
